Establishment
of Crab Processing Company in the United States
UniSea, Inc. (Headquarters: Redmond, Washington), the U.S. subsidiary
of Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd. (President & CEO: Naoya Kakizoe), and a
local partner have jointly established BERING SEA PARTNERS, LLC (hereinafter "BSP")
as a new company in order to acquire a processing quota for crabs in the
United States. The new company aims to contribute to the expansion and
development of UniSea, Inc.'s crab business by operating within the framework
of new regulations (*1) concerning the harvest and processing of crabs
in Alaska. In accordance with this aim, BSP has acquired Royal Aleutian
Seafoods Inc., which possesses a crab quota in the State of Alaska.
The Nissui Group is pressing forward with the development of integrated
business systems and a global supply chain based on those systems. As
part of this initiative, it has worked to strengthen its access to marine
resources, and this new company will extend that capability in the United
States.
The volume of crabs handled by UniSea, Inc. in the Alaska area will
double thanks to this new company, classing Nissui as the top group in
the Alaska area.
(*1)Bering Sea Crab Rationalization Regulations New regulations which
enforce a change from Olympic-style fishery (harvesting through free competition
within a set limit) to a quota system under which a harvest quota is given
to fishery operators and a processing quota is given to each processor
based on the volume of crabs harvested.
