Nissui’s aquaculture feed

Nissui uses a share of the fishmeal and fish oil it purchases to produce fish feed at group company SA and three fish feed & oil plants based in Japan. Nissui believes that "fish will not be happy unless their feed is good enough for humans to eat." Nissui's verticallyintegrated business structure is what makes the achievement of this ideal possible. One very distinct characteristic that sets Nissui apart is that Japanese staff are placed at overseas group companies such as NAL to help with buying. The resources procured by these staff are turned into feed at Nissui’s production plants with latest process technologies based on the findings of various aquaculture research projects conducted by the Oita Marine Biological Technology Center. This feed is then supplied to Kurose Suisan Co.,Ltd., which operates aquaculture fields in Japan. Organically linking each of these stages in the supply chain leads to happy farmed fish, and consequently to happy customers.

Stable operation of the fishmeal and fish oil business depends on reliable access to materials. As such, the head of the Global Purchasing Office is now seriously investigating whether it is a smart choice for Nissui to remain highly dependent on the two South American countries of Chile and Peru for fishmeal and fish oil. In addition to the reality of reduced fishing quotas, with recent changes in climate, there is no predicting when the fish used to make fishmeal and fish oil will disappear from the seas of Chile and Peru due. The Global Purchasing Office has therefore begun the process of examining and selecting other countries from which it can gain access to supplies. Furthermore, Nissui is entrusting its long-term hopes on the use of krill, which is said to be the single largest marine resource left on earth, as one alternative material.

The fishmeal and fish oil business has evolved in tandem with Nissui's fisheries business, and is one aspect of a massive recycling system which puts the remains of fish to effective use. At the same time, it is also a forerunner toward Nissui's current vision of "creating many values from marine resources." Thanks to this powerful purchasing network, Nissui is able to develop unique initiatives such as the vertically-integrated feed and aquaculture business and functional oils and fats business. In the future, Nissui looks forward to increased activity by related businesses, led by material purchasing through this powerful network.
